The UP Alumni Association (UPAA) held the UP Alumni Council with the theme “The Challenge to UP as the National University” on June 25, 2010 at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City. 

The UP Alumni Council, the advisory body of the UPAA, holds a meeting once a year. It drafts and passes resolutions that are presented for ratification to the general membership for ratification to the general membership at the General Homecoming and Reunion.

For this year, the Council passed six resolutions: 

1)    UP assist and influence the CHED to improve the quality of higher education nationwide by making the curricula more flexible and if possible to dispense with licensing in the exercise of certain professions and thus, help in national development and meet global challenges, as well

2)    UP must seek resources to support its programs independent from political powers

3)   UP help to raise awareness of the importance of music and that the quality of music education in the Philippines be upgraded starting as early as grade school

4)   UP Board of Regents BOR) and the UP System (UPS) Administration work for an annual budget higher than that allocated by congress last year, and for the passage of a law allotting to the University a certain percentage of corporate taxes.

5)  UP BOR & the UPS Administration take measures to ensure that the University’s scientific research activities are always adequately funded, further resolved that the UPAA enlist the expertise of its alumni members abroad to assist in the University’s scientific research

6)   Loose land boundaries of UP Diliman Campus be effectively fenced and its security service be strengthened

The panel of discussants included: Dr. Jose B. Cruz, Jr; Prof. Marvic F. Leonen, Dr. Judy M. Taguiwalo, Dr. Caesar A. Saloma, and Dr. Ramon G. Acoymo.

Chaired by Atty. Rita Linda V. Jimeno, UPAA 3rd vice president, the Resolutions Committee had Dr. Ruby G. Alacantara, Atty. Maria Paz Tagle-Chua, and Atty. Renato B. Valdecantos as members.

Meanwhile, six UPLB alumni and one UPLB alumni chapter were among the 27 awardees recognized by the UP Alumni Association during the UP General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion held on June 26, 2010 at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City.

Awarded were Dr. Cleofas P. Rodriguez-Cervancia, BSA ’68, MS ’72, PhD ’82, Community Development through Research and Extension Services; Dr. Carolyn Anne L. Canda-Benigno, DVM ’85, International Public Service (Animal Health); Mr. Lucio N. Tabing, BSA ’70, Rural Community empowerment through Broadcast Communication;  Dr. Agustin B. Molina Jr, BSA ’73, MS ’79, Science and Technology (Banana Research);Dr. Rey  A. Elizondo, BSAE ’68, Science and Technology (Food Engineering); and Dr. Cynthia T. Hedreyda, BSB ’76, MSG ’83, Science and Technology (Molecular Biology).

The UPLB Alumni Association-America was given the Service Award for an Alumni Chapter. (ES Mariveles)
