The College of Economics and Management (CEM) held its 33rd Foundation Day Celebration on July 25, 2011. Chancellor Luis Rey I. Velasco together with his wife Dr. Ma. Theresa H. Velasco, professor at the College of Development Communication and CEM Dean Flordeliza A. Lantican, led the ribbon cutting for the inauguration of the renovated building of the Department of Agribusiness Management (DAM) and the launching of the CEM exhibits.
The theme of the celebration was “Excellence and Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship”. Mr. Francisco “Paco” D. Magsaysay, president of the Real Fresh Dairy Farms, Inc. and chief executive officer (CEO), Asian Vision Cable Holdings, Inc, was the guest speaker. His message focused on accelerating economic growth through development of entrepreneurial skills. Mr. Magsaysay challenged the students to come up with exceptional quality products, pursue their own passion, and be motivated to excel in what they will be doing.
CEM also recognized its outstanding alumni, namely: Hon. Isidro T. Ungab (BSAE ’83), Public Service; Atty. Elmore O. Capule (BSAB ’83), Law and Banking Governance; Dr. Roberto F. Rañola Jr. (BSAB ’83), Higher Education Governance; Dr. Danilo C. Cardenas (BSAE ’75 and PhDAE ’97), Government Service; Dr. Achilles C. Costales (PhDAE ’90), Livestock Sector Development and Dr. Herminia A. Francisco (BSAE ’78 and PhDAE ’86), Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Conservation.
Associate Professor Dr. Jose M. Yorobe, Jr., Department of Agricultural Economics, received the Outstanding Researcher Award while Prof. Amelia L. Bello, Department of Economics, was awarded Best Teacher.
Dr. Virginia R. Cardenas, vice chancellor for community affairs, gave the inspirational message on behalf of Chancellor Velasco. Special performances were rendered by UPLB Chorale Ensemble, and UPLB Sandayaw Cultural Group. (PXMADelosReyes)
