The UPLB Alumni Association (UPLBAA) and the University hosted the annual Graduation Ball in honor of the graduating Class of 2013 at the Seniors’ Social Garden on April 19. The affair was attended by graduating students, UPLB officials, faculty members and staff, and UPLBAA board members. Dr. Jean O. Loyola, officer-in-charge of the Office of Alumni Relations, spearheaded the event.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Loyola welcomed the members of Class 2013 to the fold of UPLB alumni and challenged them to be as committed and dedicated as the UPLBAA leaders in giving back to their Alma Mater. She encouraged them to continue to embody the legacy of being Iskolars Para sa Bayan and to always strive for excellence as they embark in their new journey in life.
The graduating students were treated to surprise numbers by selected members of the UPLB faculty and officials. The UPLB Street Jazz Company also gave an electrifying intermission number. Much applauded among the performances of the faculty members and officials were those of Mr. Lester Charles A. Umali of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP); Dr. Leticia E. Afuang, director of the Office of Student Affairs; Dr. Domingo E. Angeles, dean of the College of Agriculture; Dr. Virgilio P. Sison, director of the IMSP; Dr. Loyola; and UPLB Chancellor Rex Victor O. Cruz.
In his message to the graduates, Chancellor Cruz advised the graduating class to set their priorities right so that success will never be far from them. He also reminded them that their eventual recognition in their profession will reflect the University’s quality of education. “Your success is also the success of UPLB” Chancellor Cruz said. He also encouraged them as future alumni to become proactively involved and to support the activities/programs of the University for nation building. He then ended his brief message by leading the faculty and administrators in singing the inspirational song “Magsimula Ka” for the members of the graduating class.
The program was followed by a sumptuous dinner and a raffle for 34 door prizes donated by officials of the alumni association of the College of Human Ecology, College of Development Communication, College of Public Affairs, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Economics and Management, and the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology.
Afterwards, the program was closed by Mr. Simeon A. Cuyson, president of UPLBAA. He congratulated and hailed the graduates for triumphantly surmounting the trials and challenges in their university years. Dancing and more raffle draws then followed. Dr. Aurelio A. Delos Reyes (CEAT) and Prof. Mildred O. Moscoso (CDC) were the emcees in the program. (PXMA Delos Reyes)
