PIChE awards Prof. Rex Demafelis as outstanding chemical engineer of 2013

Professor Rex B. Demafelis was awarded as the 2013 Outstanding Chemical Engineer (Academe) for his exemplary works in the field of chemical engineering during the annual national convention of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE).

Chemical Engineers across the country were called together last February 20 to 22, 2013 at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center in Legazpi,City for the 74th PiChE National Convention with the theme “CHEMICAL ENGINEERS: At the Forefront of Climate Change Mitigation”. It has been an annual affair of PIChE, the only PRC-Accredited Professional Organization in the field of chemical engineering, to evaluate the achievements and contributions of notable chemical engineers in the industry, education, government service, research and development, and entrepreneurship through its awards program known as the PIChE Outstanding Chemical Engineer Awards (OChEA).

The awarding ceremony for the OChEA was held on the first day of the convention. Among the nominees from different sectors, Prof. Demafelis solely qualified to the criteria of the awards program. Gracing the awarding rites were Engr. Ferdinand C. Zapanta (PIChE President), Engr. Rey L. Esguerra (Awards Committee Chairman), Engr. Susan C. Benitez (National Convention Chairperson) and Engr. Fe R. Rubio (PIChE-Bicol President). Professor Demafelis also had a significant contribution in the convention through his presentation of the Status and Direction of the Philippine Biofuel Industry during the plenary session.

Professor Rex B. Demafelis, Professor IV, is a faculty of the Department of Chemical Engineering College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, University of the Philippines Los Baños. He is currently the Convenor of the UPLB Alternative program and Chairman of the UPLB Energy System and Solid Waste Management Committees. He has long range of technical and professional involvement in researches on biofuels particularly on bioethanol, biodiesel and biogas production systems. Few of his notable awards are University of the Philippines (System wide) Alumni Association Outstanding Alumni in Chemical Engineering 2011, Fellow, Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2010, CHEd RePUBLICA Regional Award in 2010, UPLB Outstanding Teacher Award in Physical Sciences in 2006,Certifacate of Recognition , Board of Chemical Engineering, Professional Regulation Commission in 2005 and Presidential Award, PIChE in 2004.
