UPLBNC48 or Abra Glutinous was renamed as Mais PAEP or PAEP corn inspired by the acronym of U.P. President Alfredo E. Pascual as UPLB paid tribute to the outgoing president on January 24, 2017 at the D.L. Umali Auditorium.

Mais PAEP or Mais na Pinagbuti Alay sa Ekonomiyang Pangkanayunan is a native recultivated variety of glutinous corn in Abra. The said variety “almost lost its place in the Abra market due to the introduction of other high-yield varieties of corn”, but Mais PAEP was revived with the help of Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

IPB managed to get the original stock through the support of DA. They studied and enhanced its yield and physical structure, successfully bringing back the stocks of Mais PAEP in its home.

IPB described Mais PAEP as “easy to harvest and not prone to sickness.” It also has a high rate of resistance to insects and pests. A hundred grams of Mais PAEP contains a high percentage of potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
